- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp almond extract (optional)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 tbsp butter, softened (for frosting)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 3 tbsp heavy cream
- Patriotic sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease it.
- Mix together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add 1 large egg, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using). Mix well.
- Combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 3 tablespoons cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in another bowl.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until edges are golden and a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
- Cool the bars on a wire rack for 15-20 minutes.
- Make the frosting by beating together 4 tablespoons softened butter and 1 cup powdered sugar.
- Add 3 tablespoons heavy cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the frosting. Beat until fluffy.
- Frost the cooled bars generously.
- Sprinkle with patriotic sprinkles.
- Cut into squares and serve!
