Description

A comforting, homemade lasagna with layers of hearty meat, rich ricotta, and gooey mozzarella, inspired by the beloved Maggiano’s recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 26 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the meats in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks for 8-10 minutes.
  2. Sauté the onions and garlic with the cooked meat until the onions are soft, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. Create the sauce by adding crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Stir in sugar, basil, fennel, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley. Simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Prepare the ricotta mixture by whisking together ricotta cheese, egg, salt, pepper, and parsley in a separate bowl.
  5. Cook your noodles according to package instructions (skip this for no-boil noodles).
  6. Assemble the lasagna: Spread a layer of sauce on the bottom of a baking dish, followed by noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, and some mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers and finish with sauce and remaining cheese.
  7. Bake at 375°F (190°C) covered with foil for 25 minutes, then uncovered for an additional 25-30 minutes until bubbly.
  8. Cool the lasagna for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Letting the lasagna rest after baking helps set the layers for easy slicing.
