A comforting, homemade lasagna with layers of hearty meat, rich ricotta, and gooey mozzarella, inspired by the beloved Maggiano’s recipe.

- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cans (28 ounces each) of crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 26 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 16 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Cook the meats in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks for 8-10 minutes.
- Sauté the onions and garlic with the cooked meat until the onions are soft, about 4-5 minutes.
- Create the sauce by adding crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Stir in sugar, basil, fennel, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley. Simmer for 20-30 minutes.
- Prepare the ricotta mixture by whisking together ricotta cheese, egg, salt, pepper, and parsley in a separate bowl.
- Cook your noodles according to package instructions (skip this for no-boil noodles).
- Assemble the lasagna: Spread a layer of sauce on the bottom of a baking dish, followed by noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, and some mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers and finish with sauce and remaining cheese.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) covered with foil for 25 minutes, then uncovered for an additional 25-30 minutes until bubbly.
- Cool the lasagna for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Letting the lasagna rest after baking helps set the layers for easy slicing.
