Description

Inspired by the flavors of classic French onion soup, this cozy bake features ground beef in a rich, caramelized onion gravy, layered over bread or rice, and finished with melted Swiss or Gruyère cheese. It’s savory, melty, and made for comfort.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp flour

1 cup beef broth

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices crusty bread or 2 cups cooked rice

1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large skillet, melt butter and cook onions over medium heat until deeply caramelized (20–25 minutes). Add garlic in the last minute.

Stir in flour, cook 1 minute. Add beef broth, Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.

In another pan, brown ground beef and drain fat. Stir into onion gravy.

In a greased 9×9 baking dish, layer bread or rice, then beef-onion mixture.

Top with shredded cheese.

Bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden.
