Inspired by the flavors of classic French onion soup, this cozy bake features ground beef in a rich, caramelized onion gravy, layered over bread or rice, and finished with melted Swiss or Gruyère cheese. It’s savory, melty, and made for comfort.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp flour
1 cup beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
4 slices crusty bread or 2 cups cooked rice
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet, melt butter and cook onions over medium heat until deeply caramelized (20–25 minutes). Add garlic in the last minute.
Stir in flour, cook 1 minute. Add beef broth, Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
In another pan, brown ground beef and drain fat. Stir into onion gravy.
In a greased 9×9 baking dish, layer bread or rice, then beef-onion mixture.
Top with shredded cheese.
Bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden.
