Description
Whether you call them candied yams or candied sweet potatoes, this dish is a Thanksgiving classic that never lasts long. Tender sweet potatoes are baked in a buttery, spiced brown sugar glaze until caramelized and irresistible. It’s comfort food at its sweetest—and a tradition worth keeping.
Ingredients
3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 5–6 medium), peeled and sliced into thick rounds
½ cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup water (or orange juice for a citrus twist)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Arrange sliced sweet potatoes evenly in the dish.
In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar, granulated sugar, water (or juice), cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla. Simmer until smooth and slightly thickened.
Pour glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes, tossing gently to coat.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
Remove foil, baste potatoes with sauce, and continue baking uncovered for 25–30 minutes more, until potatoes are tender and caramelized.
Let rest 10 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens.
